When analyzing the collectible value of antique or postwar vintage Marx trains and accessories, remember that the Train Collectors Association Condition and Grading Standards are subjective. If the pick-up shoes on the bottom of the locomotive have deep grooves worn in them, is that really a C-6 because it's otherwise virtually spotless, or does the evidence of heavy use make it a C-5? The grade a train engine, car, or entire set "should" get is not always clear. One missing or damaged car in a Commodore Vanderbilt Steam Line Electrical Train Set can make is much less attractive to collectors, especially if it is a very desirable item such as the army flatcar with the wind-up tank or lighted "Official Car." If some items require restoration, shop here for pre-war wheel sets and motors for locomotives and other needed parts.
The Sears Happi Time sets from Marx have become quite desirable collector's items, with steam train sets including the big Marx 333 0-6-2 smoking steam locomotive and more modern sets with the A-A Santa Fe power and dummy diesel engines and a combination rolling stock consist of coaches, observation cars, box cars, hoppers and a caboose. The Marx 1247 transformer, curved and straight track sections including uncoupler may all be included with an older Marx Happy Time set.
For scenic mountainous layouts, a great passenger car set is the metal Canadian Pacific with classic Victoria, Regina, Saskatoon, and Banff cars. Layouts serving industry might benefit from the action of a Marx coal dump station, 8 wheel side dump car, accessory control button and ore tray.
